The Graduate School is proud of its affiliation with W. Edwards Deming. Dr. Deming was an instructor and a leader at the School for more than 20 years. The award honors him for his association with the Graduate School, USDA as a mathematics and statistics instructor and as a curriculum chair. His influence on management and statistical analysis is legendary. The School is proud to call him one of our own--that’s why we established the Deming Training Award.
Like Dr. Deming, the Graduate School, USDA believes that quality is everyone’s responsibility. From the top down, the School strives every day to provide high-quality options in continuing education for government and private sector customers. Our products and services assist people in building their careers and enhancing their lives. The learning community we have established is second to none, and we continuously create new offerings to respond to the changing needs of our current and future learners.
At the end of his service the School presented Dr. Deming with a leadership award. Upon acceptance he said, "Those were happy days when I worked with the Graduate School."

Considered the father of the Total Quality Management movement, Dr. Deming leaves a body of work that has been described as the third stage of the Industrial Revolution. His teachings engaged all levels of employees in regulating quality control. Unheard of at the time he promoted them, Deming’s theories on quality control sparked the renewal of Japan's economy following World War II and launched the total quality management movement. Dr. Deming trained thousands of people worldwide in his theory and in the technologies of total quality management and statistical process control
