VeriFone Plunges on Inventory Error

VeriFone Holdings Inc. said it will restate results for its fiscal first, second and third quarters, due to errors in accounting related to in-transit inventory. Shares plunged nearly 50%.

The San Jose, Calif., maker of credit card readers and point-of-sale systems used by retailers said Monday that previously reported results for those periods can't be relied upon.

The company said the restatements will reduce previously reported pretax income by $8.9 million in the first quarter, $7 million in the second quarter and $13.8 million in the third quarter. VeriFone is evaluating the impact of the restatement on net income for those periods.

In addition, VeriFone said it will delay the release of results for its fourth quarter ended Oct. 31, pending completion of its review. Results were due to be issued on Thursday.

The company said it expects to report total revenue of $238 million for the quarter and $904 million for the fiscal year. In September, VeriFone projected fourth-quarter revenue of $231 million to $233 million.

VeriFone expects to file its restated quarterly reports, along with its fiscal 2007 annual report, in January.

Shares of VeriFone fell $22.73, or 47% to $25.44 in morning trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
