One highlight of the evening is the presentation of the W. Edwards Deming Entrepreneurial Excellence Award (2006)to a Siouxland businessperson in acknowledgment of outstanding contributions to the business community. The 2006 recipient of the award was Ken Ackerman.

Leonard Gill receives Deming Award

Leonard Gill of L.P. Gill Landfill in Jackson, Neb., was honored by the Chamber as the recipient of its W. Edwards Deming Entrepreneurial Excellence Award as part of the Chamber's annual dinner program Tuesday evening.

In a video produced by George Lindblade, former Mayor Bob Scott, a friend of Gill, credited Gill with being "on the cutting edge of a lot of different things, and as a "supporter of anything to do with kids."

South Sioux City Administrator Lance Hedquist referred to Gill and his wife as "Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous" for their many gifts to meet various needs. And, he noted Gill's penchant for innovation, seen most recently in his installation of methane collector wells in the garbage at the landfill to capture methane and pump it to the Sioxland Ethanol plant down the road as an energy source.

"If you promise sombeody you're going to do something -- with or without a contract -- get it done, even if it hurts," Gill said in an interview on the video.

In his remarks at the dinner, he said, "Who'd even think you'd be famous for dealing in garbage?" Then he pointed out a table of city officials: "Does this mean I can raise the price?" he asked, getting a laugh.

"I see a lot of peole in the audience who've done a lot more than I've done," said Gill.
