To the Business Editor: Yoshi Tsurumi tells us that there is no mystery to Japan's success (''Japanese Competition Can Be Healthy,'' May 1). If American industries think of long-term growth and refuse to sacrifice that for short-term profits, as Mr. Tsurumi describes the United States semiconductor industry doing by cutting back on planned investment during a recession to keep their profits looking healthy only to find itself way behind Japan when the recession lifted, then this country will be well on its way back to number one. 生產自動化是工業升級、提高生產力的一劑仙丹，但是盲目地推行，
現任美國奇異電器公司新加坡廠工程部經理的王乾元提出忠告：
生產自動化的優點人所共知，因此趙部長上台後，
王乾元在新加坡工作，心仍繫著祖國，
急的是：國內對於自動化推行的前題缺乏認識，
憂心著，於是，他寫了一封信給趙部長，
趙部長有心辦好「生產自動化」，
、長於斯的感情，王乾元允諾利用公司休假期間，願意來台開講座，
因此，最近他回國，在經濟部、工技院及生產力中心的安排下，
他說：「我是一個從生產線上出來的人。」因此，他講求「動手做」
，則無法裝拼回原樣，日本貨很簡單，內部清爽，好拆又好裝。
，國產的不如日產的。
這還不打緊，東芝的收錄音機可以採用控制系統在無人工廠中生產，
王乾元說，日本新力公司出器的「隨身聽」（Walkman）
，原因是它有良好的產品設計。
什 麼是「產品設計」？一家公司的行銷部門（Marketing）
「產品設計」是一項新觀念，也有人說它是從「工業工程」
」，「工業工程」的工作可以省略，日本是「工業工程」
工業工程」。
畢業於成大物理系的王乾元，最切服務於荷商飛歌公司在台的工廠，
他說，「產品設計」最主要是生產的前一階段工作，
過去，「產品的易裝度」及「零件數目的降低」
易裝度愈低，裝配成本愈高；反之，容易裝則人工成本少。
另外，「裝配人工數與零件數目的平方成正比」，
從事產品設計的工程師要「降低零組件的數目」，
，還要知道如何組成，並注意採用新的零組件，
據了解，日立電器公司曾將「產品設計」的完整考量方法，
西德第二大電器製造公司－－德律風根，今年倒閉，
